The Full Story
Canadian violist Ryan Vis is a versatile performer whose career spans international solo stages, high-stakes diplomatic ceremonies, and orchestras in Canada. Recently appointed to the Viola Section of Symphony Nova Scotia, Ryan’s 2026 season includes an extensive educational outreach tour across the province alongside principal members of the orchestra.
Ryan recently performed at the 50th International Viola Congress in Paris, where he presented the works of Zachary Greer alongside immersive landscapes from Canadian Geographic. His recent solo highlights include a featured recital at the National Arts Centre with pianist Carson Becke and a finalist turn at the PRISMA Festival Concerto Competition.
Ryan’s chamber music footprint is equally distinguished. He has performed for Prime Ministers Stephen Harper and Justin Trudeau, as well as for the Embassies of Spain, Finland, and France. A former guest Principal of the Kingston Symphony and Principal of the Ottawa Pops Orchestra, he is also a member of Ensemble Obiora and a frequent artist with the national Candlelight Series, having performed in over 25 programs across Canada.
Beyond the stage, Ryan serves as the President of the Canadian Viola Society and is a dedicated educator, working with the Back to Bach project. He holds a Master of Music from the University of Ottawa and a Bachelor’s from McGill University, having studied under Michael van der Sloot and Frédéric Lambert. Ryan performs on a viola crafted by Theo Marks.
Ryan was born in Seoul, South Korea, and was adopted when he was very young. He grew up in New York and enjoys figure skating, cooking and swimming.
